Our exciting Annual Gala is coming up on May 23, where we will honor Bebe Neuwirth, Al Pacino and Michael J. Stengel and Marriott International. We recently sat down with Bebe, a Tony and Emmy Award winning actress, 12-year trustee of The Fund and founder of The Dancer's Resource. Currently starring as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family-and as the lead salesperson of Morticia's Nails (the limited edition polish trio benefiting The Fund)—Bebe took some time out to answer our questions. Actors Fund: As a result of an injury, you underwent a hip replacement in 2006. How difficult was it for you to face your injury, and what kind of support did you need to work through it? And as the program founder, why did you feel it was so important to start The Dancers' Resource? Bebe Neuwirth: Facing the reality and implications of my arthritis was almost as excruciating as the physical pain itself. I probably needed more support than I sought. I needed and received physical therapy, but the emotional support and processing of what was happening is what made me see that a program for injured dancers was crucial for The Fund to embrace. Happily, the idea was immediately appreciated and accepted. |
AF: After 12 years of service as a trustee, how has working with The Actors Fund and this community of people affected you?
BN: I’m constantly inspired by The Fund’s compassion and intelligence.
AF: Congratulations on receiving The Fund's Medal of Honor at our upcoming gala on May 23. What does it mean to you to be honored by The Actors Fund in this way?
BN: I’m honored and humbled to be acknowledged this way. I mostly consider it a call to duty.
AF: Can you tell us about your album you have planned for this summer, and your cabaret "Stories with Piano"?
BN: I love singing Weill music, and am very excited to record an album this year. I’m working with my music partners Leslie Stifelman and Scott Cady. “Stories with Piano” is the name of the concerts I play with Scott around the country—story songs by an eclectic collection of composers.
