Government Agencies and Benefits

Medicare

A federally funded program that provides medical and prescription coverage for seniors and the disabled.

New York State Office for the Aging

The Office of the Aging's mission is to preserve independence for seniors as long as possible by providing advocacy and a variety of support services and programs to them and their caregivers. In addition, they host the Senior Citizen's Help Line, 1-800-342-9871, available to anyone seeking information about resources and services for seniors throughout New York State.

Social Security Administration

A federal agency that administers benefits to retired and disabled individuals, spouses of living benificiaries, and child and spousal survivors of deceased individuals eligible for Social Security benefits.

United States Administration on Aging

Works to ensure quality long-term care for seniors. They offer a host of programs for seniors who are disadvantaged socially, economically, or in terms of healthcare.

Health and Wellness

AARP

Serves older adults by providing information on topics like health, aging and employment; by advocating on personal, legislative and legal issues; and by providing a wealth of services to their members, ranging from a driver safety program to member discounts, to help with independent living and end-of-life issues.

Beth Israel Senior Health

A comprehensive health care program for older adults 65 and over offering primary medical care, consultations with physicians and house calls to those that are home-bound.

Beth Israel Senior Health: House Calls Program

Provides care to lower and midtown Manhattan's home-bound senior 65 and over. A team of geriatric physicians, nurse practitioners and social workers help seniors manage chronic illnesses so they can remain in their homes, visit patients who have difficulty getting to a doctor's office, coordinate care with visiting nurse services and community based social agencies.

Medicare Rights Center

Provides comprehensive information about Medicare options and rights through online resources and a telephone hotline service. Find information about Medicare, drug coverage options and accessing benefits on a limited income.

Mount Sinai Visiting Doctor Program

Delivers comprehensive primary care to home-bound adults throughout Manhattan, consisting of geriatrics patients, as well as those with psychiatric, neurological, complex, and terminal illnesses and also reaches out to families and caregivers to offer emotional support and counseling.

New York City Cooling Centers

When the heat index is predicted to be dangerously high, New York City opens cooling centers in air-conditioned public community centers, senior centers, and public libraries to offer people relief from the heat. Individuals who have no ready access to a cool environment, and particularly those at risk for heat-related illness, should use the cooling centers during a heat wave.

The Hebrew Home at Riverdale: RiverSpring at Night

An adult day health care program serving a population suffering from sleep disturbances associated with various types of dementia. It provides participants a host of activities throughout the night operating from 7:00pm - 7:00am. It is the only overnight adult day healthcare program in the country and is designed for people 65 years old and over living at home who require constant supervision at night.

Home Delivered Meals

Citymeals-on-Wheels

Provides home-delivered meals to New York's homebound seniors 60 years old and over.

Encore Community Services

Provides meals each day to home-bound seniors on the West Side of Manhattan from 14th St. to 110th St. from 8th Ave. to the Hudson River and select areas of Midtown.

Meals on Wheels Henry Street Settlement

Homebound seniors or those unable to prepare their own meals 60 years of age and older who live in Manhattan Community Districts 1, 2, 3, 5 or 6 can receive home delivered meals.
